Company Culture

What is Company Culture:

Many people think of company culture as what parties the company throws, the core values the owner writes down on a piece of paper and forgets about, or even the mission statement broadcasted on the website that no one ever looks at.

But company culture is more than that, company culture is everything.

If you think about what a company is, a company is an organization.

Think about what an organization is. An organization is a group of people that come together to form a similar goal.

What is company culture? Company culture is aligning that group of people to come together to form that common goal.

So if this was a math equation and the company is the problem, then company culture would be the solution.

Company culture is the personality of an organization. So, take one's personality and image that they never thought about who they truly are but rather let other people form their personality throughout time. Imagine they had a friend who really liked pool so they liked pool, or they had a brother who really liked drinking beer so they liked beer, or even a sister who was really outgoing and was an extravert so they went out and tried to be outgoing and an extravert. But the problem is that person is none of those things, the reality is, they were much better suited for tennis, they hate the taste of beer, preferring whiskey, and they are an introvert. That is just who they are, but they let the people around them take control of their personality and let them take the wheel.

A similar thing happens in small businesses, when a founder starts a company, they cannot do everything and cannot hire people right off the bat to do everything either because of a lack of cash flow or a lack of time. So, they hire a marketing company, a human resource company, an accounting firm, etc. These things are necessary and not necessarily bad, but the problem is the marketing company likes pool while your company likes tennis, the HR company likes beer while yours prefers the taste of whiskey, and the accountant is an extrovert while yours is actually an introvert.

Having other people with different personalities is not a bad thing at all, but having other companies drive your personality (Company Culture) can be. The problem is the business owner sees the direction they want to go and how they get there but the 3 or more other companies they outsourced all have their hands on the wheel and while they see the goal, they also all see different roads to get there. While drinking beer is not necessarily a bad thing, drinking whiskey is how your company will get to the finish line. So, while bigger companies have all of their people employed and are driving in a straight line to the finish line, your company is taking zigzags with four plus people's hands on the wheel.
